Last Known Information

Will Brown, 40, a meatpacking plant worker later regarded by historians as innocent, was lynched by a mob in Omaha on the night of September 28, 1919, four days after a white woman accused him of assault. Brown was being held in the Douglas County Courthouse jail when a mob of thousands surrounded the building, set it on fire, and battled police for hours; when Omaha's mayor tried to intervene he was nearly lynched himself before being rescued. The mob eventually seized Brown, beat him, hanged him from a lamp pole outside the courthouse, shot his body more than one hundred times, then burned it and dragged the remains behind a car through the streets. A newspaper photograph of the burned body became one of the most widely reproduced images of the Red Summer of 1919, a nationwide wave of racial violence. Federal troops were called in to restore order. No one was ever charged in Brown's killing.
