Last Known Information

Lester Mitchell, a West Dayton business owner, was shot in the face with a shotgun just after 3 a.m. on September 1, 1966, while sweeping the sidewalk outside his bar on West Fifth Street. Witnesses said a red car pulled up and a white man fired from inside it before driving off; accounts differed on whether one man or several were involved. Mitchell was taken to the hospital, where he later died of his wounds. The killing, in a city where discriminatory housing policy had crowded some 60,000 Black residents into a segregated west side with underfunded schools and city services, triggered one of the worst riots in Dayton's history; Ohio's governor deployed roughly 1,000 National Guardsmen, who remained in the city for five days. Months later, Dayton's police chief told reporters an informant had identified the shooter as a man who had since died in an unrelated shootout, but a retired detective who later reexamined the case found little evidence police had done much to confirm that account. No one was ever charged.
