Last Known Information

Carl Hampton, 21, founder and chairman of the People's Party II — a Houston organization modeled on the Black Panther Party — was shot and killed on the night of July 26, 1970, the tenth day of a standoff between his group and Houston police that had begun after officers were seen harassing a member selling the group's newspaper. Houston police officers, positioned with rifles on the roof of a nearby church, fired on Hampton and others outside the group's headquarters on Dowling Street; Hampton was hit in the stomach and chest and died at the hospital hours later. Police said the shooting was in self-defense, responding to gunfire from the headquarters; community members and later researchers disputed that account, and the circumstances remain contested. A Harris County grand jury declined to indict any of the officers involved.
