Last Known Information

Rogers Hamilton, 18, was abducted from his home near Hayneville at about 1:30 a.m. on October 22, 1957. According to his mother, Beatrice Hamilton, one or two white men drove up in a pickup truck and called Hamilton's name several times; he went outside, spoke with one of the men, then got into the truck with him. His mother followed on foot and watched as the truck stopped a short distance away, where she said a white man standing outside it drew a pistol and shot her son in the face. Some accounts report Hamilton had recently been seen waving at a white girl in town, which relatives believe may have prompted the killing. The Lowndes County sheriff's office investigated but never identified a suspect, and a later reporter found the sheriff had privately dismissed Beatrice Hamilton's eyewitness account as implausible. No one was ever arrested. The DOJ closed its file in 2016, citing the lack of any identified subject and the destruction of the original Lowndes County sheriff's office records.
